This passcode encrypts your file on this device and never leaves it, not even to the sync server. Keep it different from your account password. There is no reset without your recovery code.
Terms and privacy
Your data. Your file lives on this device. If you sign in, a copy syncs to your account so your devices stay in step. With the passcode lock on, that copy is end-to-end encrypted, so the server (and I) can’t read it; with the lock off, the synced copy is readable by the server, like any ordinary cloud service. Signed-in devices also send basic usage counts (opens and activity totals) to help improve Ask. Your contacts and notes are never part of that, never shared, and never sold. If you clear your browser data or delete the app without an account or a backup, your file is gone, so export a backup regularly.
Your responsibility. You are responsible for keeping the information you enter appropriate and compliant with your firm’s policies and your regulatory obligations.
